History How it came to be
HAWAII KAI -- First there was the seed of an idea that blossomed into a dream and then matured into a plan lets do fireworks on Maunalua Bay for the Fourth of July!
It always takes one go-getter to get the ball rolling on such a project. That person for Independence Day at Maunalua Bay was Cha Thompson, a 35-year resident of Portlock and co-owner with husband Jack of Tihati Productions. Although the idea came from another Portlock resident, Paige Altonn, Cha spearheaded the project almost from inception in late 2007.
Cha and Paige did the rounds of service clubs seeking support for that inaugural year. Many East Oahu businesses and restaurants stepped forward to be financial sponsors. Then, the duo got friends, family and co-workers involved and the much needed volunteer force was born. That volunteer force is still the heart of Independence Day at Maunalua Bay.
As the plan took shape, organizers created a non-profit Independence Day at Maunalua Bay Foundation. As a result of these efforts, fireworks fill the night sky over Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai on July 4 to conclude the annual Independence Day at Maunalua Bay celebration.
Part of the mission of the Independence Day at Maunalua Bay Foundation, which sponsors the event, is to provide scholarships for East Honolulu students. Seventy-five percent of net proceeds from the July 4 celebration go to the scholarship fund. The Foundation awarded its first three $2,000 scholarships in 2010.
The event is an all-volunteer, grass-roots effort bringing together Hawaii Kai residents, businesses and schools in a celebration of family, friend s and freedom. Financial donors -- sponsor levels range from $10,000 to $1,000 -- provide the majority of funds needed to put on the fireworks show and other activities an estimated $65,000 price tag. Vendors and community groups offer food, drinks and keiki games.
